Overview

Why Antalya?

Antalya is Turkey's undisputed tourism capital and consistently ranks among the world's most visited cities, welcoming over 16 million international visitors each year. Perched between the dramatic Taurus Mountains and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea along the famed Turkish Riviera, this ancient port city seamlessly blends millennia of history with modern resort luxury — all at prices that keep your wallet happy.

The city's appeal is staggeringly diverse. Within a single day you can wander Roman-era streets in the beautifully preserved Kaleiçi old quarter, sunbathe on a Blue Flag beach backed by snow-dusted peaks, haggle for spices at a vibrant open-air bazaar, and finish with a sunset dinner overlooking the harbour — where traditional wooden gulets bob alongside sleek yachts. Whether you're a history buff, a beach lover, an adventure seeker, or a foodie, Antalya delivers.

With Antalya Airport (AYT) receiving direct flights from over 200 destinations worldwide, getting here is effortless. Add in year-round Mediterranean sunshine, affordable all-inclusive resorts, and a wealth of day-trip options to ancient cities like Aspendos, Perge, and Termessos — and it's clear why seasoned travellers return to Antalya again and again.

What Makes Antalya Special

From sun-drenched coastlines to remarkably intact Roman ruins, Antalya packs an extraordinary range of experiences into one destination. Here are the three biggest reasons travellers fall in love with the city.

☀️
300+ Days of Sunshine
Antalya enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate with over 300 sunny days per year. Summer highs of 34°C are perfect for beach days, while mild winters (12–16°C) make off-season exploring comfortable and crowd-free.
🏊
Blue Flag Beaches
The Antalya province holds more Blue Flag beaches than almost any region in the world. From the pebble shores of Konyaaltı to the golden sands of Lara, the crystal-clear waters are warm enough to swim from May through November.
🍽️
World-Class Cuisine
Turkish cuisine is a UNESCO-recognized culinary tradition, and Antalya puts its own spin on it with fresh seafood mezes, slow-roasted kebabs, hand-stretched pide, and syrupy künefe. Street food alone is worth the flight.

Top Things to See & Do

Kaleiçi (Old Town) — The beating heart of Antalya is its walled old quarter, Kaleiçi. Narrow cobbled lanes wind past Ottoman-era mansions, Byzantine churches turned galleries, and tiny courtyard cafés draped in bougainvillea. Start at the iconic Yivli Minaret — the 13th-century Seljuk tower that has become the city's symbol — then weave downhill to the charming old harbour. Entry to the quarter is free; getting lost in it is half the fun.

Düden Waterfalls — Antalya boasts two spectacular waterfalls fed by the Düden River. The Upper Düden Falls, set in a lush park 10 km northeast of the city centre, lets you walk behind the cascading curtain of water. The Lower Düden Falls are even more dramatic — a 40-metre cascade that plunges directly off a cliff into the Mediterranean. Take a boat tour from the old harbour for the most photogenic vantage point.

Hadrian's Gate — Built in 130 AD to honour the visiting Roman Emperor Hadrian, this triple-arched marble gateway is one of the most beautifully preserved Roman structures in Turkey. Located at the edge of Kaleiçi on Atatürk Caddesi, it is the only remaining entrance through the ancient city walls and a must-stop for any history lover.

Aspendos Theatre — A 45-minute drive east of the city centre lies one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the entire ancient world. Built in 155 AD during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, Aspendos seats 15,000 spectators and still hosts concerts and opera festivals today thanks to its near-perfect acoustics. Stand at the top row and whisper — someone on the stage will hear you.

Konyaaltı & Lara Beaches — Konyaaltı, west of the city centre, stretches for 7 km beneath the Beydağları Mountains, offering a dramatic pebble-and-sand coastline with beach parks, cafés, and the Antalya Aquarium nearby. East of the city, Lara Beach features fine golden sand lined with luxury all-inclusive resorts — perfect if you prefer a resort-style holiday. Both beaches are well-served by public transport and have lifeguard stations May through October.

💡
Pro Tip
Visit the Düden Waterfalls early in the morning (before 9 AM) to avoid tour-bus crowds. For the Lower Falls, book a 2-hour boat trip from the old harbour — you'll cruise past the dramatic cliffs of Falez Park and see the waterfall crashing into the sea from water level. Most boat tours cost around 200–400 TRY per person and include soft drinks.

Getting to Antalya
Antalya Airport (AYT) is Turkey's third-busiest and the main gateway to the Turkish Riviera, with direct flights from 200+ cities across Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. The airport is just 13 km from the city centre — a taxi takes about 20 minutes (400–600 TRY). The Havaş shuttle runs every 30 minutes for around 80 TRY, and the T2 tram connects the airport to central Antalya.
Getting Around

Transportation in Antalya

Antalya has a modern and affordable public transport network that covers most areas tourists need. The Antray tram system runs two lines connecting the airport, city centre, Kaleiçi, and Konyaaltı Beach — a single ride costs just 15 TRY with an AntalyaKart smartcard. Pick one up at any kiosk near tram stops; it's rechargeable and pays for itself quickly.

For areas not served by tram, dolmuş minibuses are the local favourite. These shared mini-vans run fixed routes with no fixed timetable — they depart when full and cost between 15–30 TRY. They're the most authentic (and cheapest) way to reach the Upper Düden Falls, Lara Beach, or Kemer. Ride-hailing apps like BiTaksi work throughout the city. Car rental is worth considering if you plan day trips to Aspendos, Perge, or the mountain villages of the Taurus range.

Essential Tips for Your Antalya Trip

A few practical details to help you make the most of your time on the Turkish Riviera:

💰 Currency: Turkish Lira (TRY). Credit and debit cards are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and shops. ATMs are everywhere, but exchange offices in the bazaars sometimes offer better rates. Always carry some cash for dolmuş rides, small cafés, and market stalls.

🗣️ Language: Turkish is the official language. English is widely spoken in hotels, tourist restaurants, and major attractions. Download a Turkish phrasebook app — locals genuinely appreciate even a simple "merhaba" (hello) or "teşekkürler" (thank you).

🔌 Power: Turkey uses Type C and F plugs at 230V / 50Hz — the same as mainland Europe. If you're travelling from the UK, US, or Australia, pack a simple European two-pin adapter.

🛡️ Safety: Antalya is one of Turkey's safest cities for tourists. Petty theft is rare, but use normal precautions in crowded markets. Tap water is safe for brushing teeth but most locals drink bottled or filtered water. Sun protection is essential June–September — SPF 50, a hat, and hydration.

🌐 Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi is available in most cafés, hotels, and restaurants. For mobile data, buy a local SIM at Turkcell, Vodafone, or Türk Telekom shops near the airport — tourist SIM packages with 20 GB data start from around 500 TRY and last 30 days.
