Overview

Why Sofia?

Sofia is Europe's best-kept secret — one of the continent's oldest cities, settled over 7,000 years ago, yet somehow still flying under the tourist radar. That means you get authentic experiences, friendly locals who aren't jaded by overtourism, and prices that make Western European capitals look absurdly expensive. A craft beer costs €2, a three-course meal rarely exceeds €15, and boutique hotels run €50–80 per night.

But Sofia isn't just cheap — it's genuinely fascinating. The city is a living archaeological site: Roman ruins sit beneath modern shopping malls, 4th-century churches hide in courtyards, and the mighty Alexander Nevsky Cathedral dominates the skyline with its golden domes. The Vitosha Mountain rises directly behind the city, offering hiking in summer and skiing in winter — all reachable by city bus.

Sofia also serves as a gateway to Bulgaria's UNESCO treasures. The stunning Rila Monastery, the medieval frescoes of Boyana Church, and the ancient Thracian tombs are all within day-trip distance. Combine history, nature, value, and a growing creative scene, and Sofia emerges as one of Europe's most compelling city break destinations for 2026.

Top Things to See & Do

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral — The undisputed symbol of Sofia, this magnificent Neo-Byzantine cathedral was built in the early 20th century to honour Russian soldiers who liberated Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. Its golden domes dominate the skyline, while the interior dazzles with marble columns, Italian mosaics, and icons by renowned Bulgarian and Russian artists. Entry is free (donations welcome); photography inside costs 10 BGN.

Ancient Serdica — Beneath the streets of modern Sofia lie the ruins of Serdica, the Roman city Emperor Constantine once called "my Rome." The most impressive remains are visible in the Serdica metro station — a working subway stop built around 2nd-century Roman streets, walls, and public buildings. Additional ruins are accessible in the underpass near the Presidency. All are free to explore.

Boyana Church (UNESCO) — This tiny medieval church, 8 km south of the centre, houses some of the finest medieval frescoes in Eastern Europe. Painted in 1259, the 240 images are considered masterpieces of European art, predating the Italian Renaissance by a century. Entry is 10 BGN, and visits are limited to 15 minutes to preserve the paintings — book ahead in summer.

Rila Monastery — Bulgaria's most famous landmark, this stunning monastery lies 120 km south of Sofia in the forested Rila Mountains. Founded in the 10th century, the current complex dates from the 19th century and features dazzling frescoes, striped arches, and a palpable sense of spiritual history. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's the most popular day trip from Sofia. Buses run from Ovcha Kupel station (2.5 hours each way).

Vitosha Mountain — Rising directly behind Sofia, Vitosha is the city's backyard playground. In summer, take bus 66 to Dragalevtsi and ride the Simeonovo-Aleko gondola to the upper slopes for hiking among wildflowers. In winter, the same slopes become Bulgaria's most accessible ski resort. The summit, Cherni Vrah (2,290m), offers panoramic views over Sofia and beyond.

Travel Tips

Essential Tips for Your Sofia Trip

A few practical details to help you make the most of your time in the Bulgarian capital:

💰 Currency: Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Bulgaria is in the EU but not the Eurozone. Cards are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops. ATMs are plentiful. The exchange rate is fixed at 1.96 BGN = 1 EUR, so conversion is easy. Always carry some cash for small purchases and public transport.

🗣️ Language: Bulgarian, written in Cyrillic script. English is spoken in tourist areas and by younger locals, but less commonly than in Western Europe. Learning a few phrases — "благодаря" (blagodarya, thank you), "моля" (molya, please), "наздраве" (nazdrave, cheers) — goes a long way.

🔌 Power: Bulgaria uses Type C and F plugs at 230V / 50Hz — same as mainland Europe. UK, US, and Australian travellers will need an adapter.

🛡️ Safety: Sofia is very safe for tourists. Violent crime is rare, and the city centre feels secure day and night. Petty theft is uncommon but be aware in crowded areas. Tap water is safe to drink — it comes from mountain springs and tastes excellent.

🌐 Connectivity: Free Wi-Fi is available in most cafés, restaurants, and hotels. For mobile data, buy a prepaid SIM from A1, Vivacom, or Telenor — tourist packages with 10+ GB cost around 15–20 BGN (€8–10).
